WPIAL High School Football Predictions: Week Zero

Each week from the start of the WPIAL season through the PIAA State Finals, Pittsburgh SportsNation brings you the best, uncensored, no holds barred predictions by our local high school football guru who goes by the moniker “P To The Power of 2”.

He is one of our underground writers who covers the hard hitting action of WPIAL High School Football in Western Pennsylvania. Love him , or hate him, he simply tells it like it is... Or is it she? Either way, we'll never tell! (Unless you have a crisp $100 bill in hand)

By P To The Power of 2

High school football has always been about building a solid foundation for a young person’s life, based on principles and experiences that can only be taught through the game.  It’s about cultivating genuine relationships between players, coaches and a community of fans.

There is nothing like high school football... and with that being said, it’s here. The eight month wait is finally over.

Opening weekend!

Last season, PToThePowerOf2’s campaign ended with 156 victories and only a mere 38 defeats. That's a winning percentage of 80%!

Week “Zero” as they call it, gets underway tomorrow evening.  PToThePowerOf2’s prime-time games and selections are here.

Non-Conference:

Central Valley Warriors (3A) vs Blackhawk Cougars (4A)

Zach Hayward made it clear to District 7 that Blackhawk is back. Coming off of an unbelievable 10-2 season, the Cougars will seek more than just a semifinal exit in the WPIAL playoffs.

Central Valley squeaked into the playoffs last year at 5-6, certainly not the standard that was set from year's prior.

Blackhawk will rely on their dual RB’s. Marques Watson-Trent and Josh Butcher will be used in a heavy-run offense this season. Last season, these two men combined for over 1,300 yards.

Central Valley has speed, and plenty of it. The Warriors will use returning QB Ameer Dudley who was just over 1,000 yards passing last year.

Last year Blackhawk shocked the Warriors in Center to the tune of 21-7. This one will also be close, but, just might get ugly if speed plays a factor. A toss up in this one....

Central Valley over Blackhawk

Non-Conference:

Mt Lebanon Blue Devils (6A) vs Gateway Gators (5A)

Coach Bob Palko leaves West Allegheny and his legacy is to now build a new one, this time with the Blue Devils of Mount Lebanon. The Devils finished .500 last year at 6-6, and had a semifinal exit in the WPIAL playoffs.

Gateway is ranked in the top 3 in the PIAA this preseason--just depending on who you follow. The Gators are loaded, plain & simple. Gator's RB Derrick Davis rushed for 1,230 yards last season and collected 20 touchdowns.

West Allegheny upset Gateway last year when Palko was coaching. Could it happen in week zero with another school and squad? No way!

Gateway over Mt Lebanon

Non-Conference:

Aliquippa Quips (3A) vs Clairton Bears (1A)

The drama continues among the fans of “Who is the better program in Western PA? Aliquippa or Clairton?”.

Don’t get us wrong here, both programs are very successful on the high school football field. But... Aliquippa has three players in the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame as Ty Law earned a  gold jacket this year, and rumor has it, there's a strong possibility that Darrell Revis will soon follow. So that argument ceases right now.

Anyhow, a game on Saturday! 6:00 pm from Clairton!

Clairton returns QB Brendan Parsons who was just shy of 1,500 yards last season and had 17 touchdowns to his credit. The Bears will return several starters for a team that lost in the semifinals.

Aliquippa, coming off a PIAA state championship, lost exceptional talent to graduation. The Quips will lean on their defense in this contest. Their star LB Zuriah Fisher is a D1 scouting dream for plenty of BCS schools. Another toss up game…..Who scores last?

Aliquippa over Clairton

As for the others…..

Derry over Latrobe

Pine Richland over Penn Hills

North Allegheny over Collegiate Academy (DC)

Thomas Jefferson over Canon McMillan

Beaver Falls over Ellwood City

Woodrow Wilson (DC) over McKeesport

Woodland Hills over Calvert Hall (MD)
