WPIAL Football 2A/5A Championship & PIAA Quarterfinals Predictions

Each week from the start of the WPIAL season through the PIAA State Finals, Pittsburgh SportsNation brings you the best, uncensored, no holds barred predictions by our local high school football guru who goes by the moniker “P To The Power of 2”.

He is one of our underground writers who covers the hard hitting action of WPIAL High School Football in Western Pennsylvania. Love him, or hate him, he simply tells it like it is... Or is it she? Either way, we'll never tell! (Unless you have a crisp $100 bill in hand)

As you glance across your local skies this Friday, the majority of stadium lights will have been off for a few weeks, and even more will be this week as we enter the PIAA Quarterfinals. The majority of district crowns were distributed last weekend and a few remain this week.

Last week, we collected seven victories and only suffered one defeat. This now places our postseason total to 43 victories and 10 defeats (81.1%).

Our overall 2019 season total now stands in with 132 victories and 31 defeats (80.9%).

Let’s do what we do best, give your our previews and selections. Off we go, the PIAA playoffs!

PIAA 6A:

Downingtown West (12-1) vs Coatesville (10-2)

This contest will be for the district 1 championship. For those who are not sure where district 1 is located, it’s located in Southeastern PA.  Rumors we are told that this game is going to be packed, so make sure you grab your 50/50 tickets!

Coatesville will ride their superior QB in Ricky Ortega who has thrown for 2,470 yards and has accounted for 38 touchdowns. His target of choice will be Dapree Bryant. Bryant has 16 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards receiving.

Downingtown counters with their QB in Will Howard. Howard has thrown for 2,238 yards with 26 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 11 touchdowns. Downingtown will also seek a large contribution for RB Tyriq Lewis who has 1,664 yards rushing and 30 touchdowns.

Earlier this season, Coatesville handed Downingtown West it’s only defeat, 28-24 on October 24th.

A toss up from Downingtown West on Friday…..

PIAA 4A:

Cathedral Prep (11-2)  vs Thomas Jefferson (13-0)
From Martorelli Stadium in Pittsburgh. The district 7 champion, Thomas Jefferson battles district 10 champion, Cathedral Prep.

Cathedral Prep will use a dual QB approach with QB Tamar Sample and Collin Johnson. Between these 2 young men, they have thrown for 25 touchdowns and close to 2,000 yards. RB Luke Sittinger will tote the rock for the Ramblers. On the season, Sittinger has 20 touchdowns and 1,410 yards. The WR duo for Cathedral Prep stacks up with WR Jaelen Carson, 815 yards with 13 touchdowns and WR Jack Oedekoven, 719 yards and eight touchdowns.

Thomas Jefferson 3rd year starting QB Shane Stump is the heart & soul of the Jaguars offense. Stump has 2,085 yards passing with 28 touchdowns. Stump is also a threat on the ground, he has eight touchdowns in that department. The Jaguars will use RB Dylan Mallozzi on the ground. Mallozzi has 21 touchdowns with 1,380 yards rushing. WR Daniel Deabner has 918 yards receiving with 16 touchdowns.

These teams are no stranger to each other as they have played each other three times in the past four years, Cathedral Prep winning all three of the contests, 28-21 (2015), 30-13 (2016) and 42-17 (2017).

For the past eight seasons, the WPIAL has played Cathedral Prep and only has one victory. That was West Allegheny in 2009, when the Indians defeated Cathedral Prep 36-21.  For the 9th time in 11 years, Cathedral Prep will battle the WPIAL champion.

The Jaguars bring a strong, loaded and talent roster into this matchup. Cathedral Prep is the 3-time defending PIAA State Champion.

An absolute dandy is on the way tomorrow from Pittsburgh. However, the streak ends here.
