WPIAL Football Semifinal/Championship Saturday Predictions

Each week from the start of the WPIAL season through the PIAA State Finals, Pittsburgh SportsNation brings you the best, uncensored, no holds barred predictions by our local high school football guru who goes by the moniker “P To The Power of 2”.

He is one of our underground writers who covers the hard hitting action of WPIAL High School Football in Western Pennsylvania. Love him, or hate him, he simply tells it like it is... Or is it she? Either way, we'll never tell! (Unless you have a crisp $100 bill in hand)

By P To The Power of 2

A cold Thursday evening from the banks of Lake Erie, as we come to you live, from Shoreline Bar & Grille. As we watch the frigid water crash into the rocks outside of the window along the patio of Sassafras Pier.

This week, we look to the Semifinals in the 5A and 2A classifications and the WPIAL finals from Heinz Field on Saturday for 1A, 3A, 4A & 6A.

Our lovely bartender has provided us with a standout selection of localized beverages & cocktails. So while she creates these cocktails for us, we’ll dive into our selections for this weekend.

Last week, we posted a record of 11 victories and 5 defeats. Taking our 2019 postseason total to 36 victories and 9 defeats (80.0%); Our 2019 season total moves to 125 victories and 30 defeats (80.6%).

As some of critics decided to send tweets or emails to us after games were concluded last week to comment on our selections after the games were concluded, seems as if the scapegraces are out in full force now.

Class A Final: Saturday at 11:00 am, Heinz Field

StoRox Vikings (11-1) vs Clairton Bears (10-2)

Last week, Clairton defeated Cornell, 39-0. StoRox upended West Greene, 24-7.

The Bears are lead by QB Brendan Parsons who has thrown for nearly 1,700 yards and has 19 touchdowns to his credit via the pass. He’ll use his running ability as well. Parsons has 900 yards on the ground with 11 touchdowns.

StoRox returns to the title game led by their QB, Eric Wilson. Eric has thrown for 3,020 yards on the season and has 27 touchdowns.

StoRox has not won a district title since 1987, which was one of 2 championships. Clairton has 14 titles and has not won since 2016.

Close…. very very close…

Clairton over StoRox

Class AAA Final: Saturday at 2:00 pm, Heinz Field

Aliquipa Quips (11-1) vs Central Valley Warriors (11-1)

Last week, Aliquippa slid past South Park, 21-7. Central Valley run up the score on Derry, 42-7.

Aliquippa will need a strong game from RB Antonio Quinn, who has 1,180 yards rushing on the season with 13 touchdowns. Quips defense will need to have a perfect game on Saturday.

Central Valley continues to ride Ameer Dudley, who has 20 touchdowns and 1,647 yards passing. The Warriors only loss came courtesy of Thomas Jefferson, when the Jaguars exposed the Warriors, 28-3 in week six.

Aliquippa is making their 9th straight district championship, and looking for title number 18. If the Quips want to win, they’ll need to make dramatic changes on offense and defense in a short three week span.

Close early with emotions, but simply not enough.

 Central Valley over Aliquippa

Class AAAA Final: Saturday at 5:00 pm, Heinz Field

Belle Vernon Leopards (10-1) vs Thomas Jefferson Jaguars (12-0)

Last week, Belle Vernon avenged last year’s semifinal defeat by South Fayette, by defeating them, 41-30 in a heroic 4th quarter comeback. Thomas Jefferson crushed Blackhawk, 49-0.

Belle Vernon’s Jared Hartman leads the way for the Leopards as he has thrown for 1,744 yards and has 29  touchdowns. RB Larry Calloway has over 1,000 yards on the ground with 18 touchdowns.

Thomas Jefferson QB Shane Stump continues to air attack every team the Jaguars face. This season, Stump has thrown for 2,149 yards and has 31 touchdown tosses. The Jaguars will also feature RB Dylan Mallozzi who has 1,205 yards on the ground with 18 touchdowns.
Belle Vernon is making their first district championship appearance since 1999! The Leopards only title coming back in 1995.

Thomas Jefferson has eight district championships and have won three of the last four. Bill Cherpak is seeking WPIAL title number eight , this would tie him with Bob Palko.

During week 2, Thomas Jefferson crushed Belle Vernon, 34-7. It’s been a great season for Belle Vernon, but Thomas Jefferson wants revenge to a team here in Erie.

A huge PIAA match-up looms large next week versus Cathedral Prep…

Class AAAAAA Final: Saturday at 8:00 pm, Heinz Field

Pine Richland Rams (10-1) vs Central Catholic Vikings (10-1)

Last week, Pine Richland destroyed North Allegheny, again, 49-14. Central Catholic took care of Mt Lebanon, 31-14.

Rams QB Cole Spencer has thrown for 2,830 yards this season with 35 touchdowns. WR Eli Jochem is only 16 yards away from a 1,000 yard season,  and he has 13 touchdown receptions. The Rams will seek title number three.

Central Catholic will look to RB Eddy Tillman on Saturday. Eddy has compiled 1,700 yards rushing and has 25 touchdowns. The Vikings defense has held opponents to an average of 10.7 points per game. They’ll look to take home title number seven.

Earlier this season, the Vikings defeated Pine Richland 29-7… Is this a revenge game?  Defense wins championships, and Central Catholic has a good one… but, is it good enough?

As for the Semi-Finals, here are our selections…

5A:

Peters Township over Penn Trafford

Gateway over McKeesport

2A:
